Final Exam Discussion and Practice Questions

Our final exam will take place in the classroom on Tuesday 10 July, starting at the normal time (6:10pm). I've posted some practice questions in the Assignments section on the right. These should give you an idea of what will be asked on the exam and what its format will be.

If you have any questions about the exam or the material, feel free to post them here as a comment to this post. While I'm happy to answer questions in person or via email, posting them here can benefit everyone.

Good luck!

Hi Ebony. I'm out of town right now and can't look up the page reference, but in class we discussed how the fog symbolizes the escape behavior of Mary, who uses morphine to blind herself from the present reality. She likes the way in which the fog shields her from seeing -- and being seen by -- other people. There's a speech in which she expresses this, and also states that the foghorn is always present to remind of the danger, in her case the traumatic memories and guilt that are never removed by her escapism.

That's the best I can remember without the text in front of me. In the meantime, you should go back and look at the speech. I believe it's in the scene in which Mary and Cathleen are talking in the dining room, Act 3 perhaps?

Also, the fog may symbolize the "clouding" of Mary's head, as she's falling into a state of depression that leads to her taking the drug. In that sense, the foghorn is a symbol for reality that calls her back, interrupting her delirium at times.
